General Affidavit State of Pennsylvania, Co. of York, SS In the matter original Pension Claim of Oscar M. Johnston. On this 10 day of February, A.D. 1890, personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace in and for the aforesaid Co., duly authorized to administer oaths, C.F. Johnston aged 43 years, a resident of York Haven in the Co. of York and State of Pennsylvania whose post office address is York Haven York Co PA.

I have known the Claimant Oscar M. Johnston before the war who was then a sound able bodied man and who was a soldier in war of 1861 to 1865. I seen in August 1865 after his discharge the said Claimant was then suffering from a rupture in the right groin and know this to be a fact from my own observation and apparently by said rupture he is disabled from performing manual labor without endangering his life. I have seem him frequently since his discharge the last time I seen him was in February 1889. The claimant visited me at the last time I saw him and stayed at my house about one week the said claimant was still suffering from said rupture in the right-groin. The above fact I state from my knowledge as being an eye witness. I further declare that I have no interest in said case and am not concerned in its prosecution. C.F. Johnston

State of Pennsylvania Co. of York. Sworn to and subscribed before me this day by the above name affiant, and I certify that I read said affidavit to said affiant, including the words erased and the words added, and acquainted him with its contents before he executed the same. I further certify that I am in nowise interested in said case, nor am I concerned in its prosecution; and that said affiant is personally known to me and this he is a credible person. Reuben P. Strominger, Justice of the Peace

That sometime near the latter part of Dec. 1862 the within named soldier Oscar M. Johnston contracted chills & fever & rheumatism which continued to the time the Regt was on veteran furlough in 1863. After we returned to the Front the diseases continued more or less to the time of his discharge 1865. Sometime in the latter part of Nov - (day & date cannot remember) he received a severe fracture of the collar bone (right side) from which he has always complained every time I saw or heard from him. This he received from his horse falling on him while in a charge near Macon, GA. He was also hurt internally on right side which produced rupture from which he has since suffered - My reasons for the above is I had charge of "F" Co. and the said soldier was with me during my connection with Co. to the day of final discharge in July 18th 1865 at Lexington, N.C. Respectfully yours, H.B. Waltman Late Capt. "F" Co. 9th Regt. Pa. Cav. Vol. Cav York, Pa. July 8th 1890

He was an old soldier, served three years nine months in active service and was in thirty-six battles. No doubt his disease was contracted in the army. His last illness began several months ago and has been great, but patient and uncomplaining sufferer and passed from this world with the Christian's confident hope of awaking in a better one. He leaves a devoted wife and four children who have the sympathy of their many friends in their sad affliction.
