The Grace Lawn Cemetery is located at the southwest edge of Howard, Kansas, section 11, township 30, range 10e and the coordinates are lat. 374583674N, lon. 96.2724961W.

The cemetery has been divided into 14 numerical blocks and the block locations are listed after the dates for each entry. All but a few of these locations, block numbers, are used as links to the photograph of the grave marker.

Civil War Soldier Passes

Clarkson Frazier Johnston was born in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, January 20, 1847 and died August 27, 1932, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. C. Knickerbocker of this city.

At the age of 14 years he answered the call to service and enlisted in the Civil War, with Co. K. and 19th Regiment, serving 18 months, after which he re-enlisted in Co. I., 53rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry and remained in service until the close of the war.

In the year 1880 he was united in marriage to Miss Georgiana Caples at Kansas City Missouri; she having preceded him to the Better World some years ago. To this union were born five children, namely Oscar Otis of Webb City, Missouri; Mrs. D. C. Knickbocker of this city; Harry Lloyd of Higginsville, Missouri´ Laurence Roy of this city and Florence Fern, who departed this life about four years ago, beside four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews and many friend to mourn his loss.

Soon after the close of the war he came to Kansas where he made his home until his death. Being of the pioneers of Kansas, and of such sterling character he was enabled to meet the hardships of the pioneer. His disposition was sunny and cheerful; and he made many friends where ever he went.

For the past five years he had been a sufferer, but always patient and loving. His daughter, Mrs. Knickerbocker had been at his bedside continually, his pal, until the last, and he will be missed in this home where he was so dearly loved.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 28th at 4:30 at the Moon Funeral Home, under the auspices of the American Legion Carter-Rader Post, and conducted by Rev. J. W. Bayles of the Baptist church; The music was furnished by a quartet from the Christian church choir, Mrs. L. P. Mills, Mrs. Gertrude Walker, M. M. Munsinger and L. P. Mills, Miss Ester Mills presided at the piano. The active and honorary pall-bearers were members of the Legion. The Legion was in charge at the grave and gave their beautiful burial service. The body was laid to rest in Grace Lawn cemetery.
